Walking Mangareva
MFT: A nice walk!
LFP: No rivers…
So yesterday, I spent the day in a rather
fruitless attempt to find some rivers to gather more fluvial sediment. On the
plus side, I did buy a container of mango sorbet that was absolutely excellent!
Plus I got to walk with Bri and Margaret all afternoon and we ended up walking
more than 10 miles along Mangareva island. We pretty much just meandered down
the road stopping for a swim and taking shelter under various trees when it
started to pour.
Our day started with some excitement as
the anchor had dragged during the night, so I woke up to the sound of the
anchor winch and the motor as we re dropped our anchor. Then it really started
raining and there was a lovely line of squalls all piled up behind each other
hanging ominously over the lagoon. As such, we were discouraged from hiking the
mountains. Sadly, that was my big plan, to go hike the other mountain. However,
it was not to be and in retrospect I agree that it would have been a bad idea.
There was quite a lot of rain (interspersed with some sunlight) and rather
drenching downpours periodically.
Nevertheless, it was fun day walking with
my friends around the island. We managed to stick to the road less traveled (at
least by other SEA students) so we had a fair amount of solitude. We had a
pretty quite evening on board boat during watch.
