MFT: Iced coffee
LFP: Moving all of our equipment around (endlessly)
Hallo, sorry for the delayed post we’ve had little internet
access. So Friday was our last day on Kwajalein atoll and it was a crazy day.
On the one hand it felt like we didn’t do anything on the other hand it was an
exhausting day. First we had to pack everything up for our trip back from
Roi-Namur to Kwajalein island. That flight was pretty successful and nice and
quick. Then when we got back to Kwajalein we spent most of the time re-packing
all of the equipment and personal gear for a united flight to Majuro Atoll.
Luckily the storage unit where most of the equipment was
stored had AC! Also, we had to recover our HOBO that we had deployed for water
level logging. Chris is the super-packer so mostly we tried to stay out of his
way. The big problem for us is that none of our bags may exceed 50 lbs. Now we
came over with 14 checked bags and another 8 bags of carry on. However, we’ve
been adding samples to our bags so we were now up to 15 checked bags! The
biggest piece of luck we had is that we found a scale in the storage unit which
enabled us to check weight and repack as needed.
Finally around 3 pm we shuttled over all of the equipment to
the airport and started weighing things there with the nice baggage guys who
took us over to Roi (the united terminal didn’t open for a bit). They weighed
everything and used a huge machine to lift them over to the united terminal.
The united terminal people were a bit astounded at the number of bags we had
(not that I blame them). Luckily they were much nicer than the Boston united
people so things went faster. Once we had checked in we had to wait post
security in the airport lounge till we boarded. The best part of the flight was
that it only took 45 minutes to get to Majuro, the capital of the Marshall
Islands.
It ended up taking us about an hour to collect all the
luggage and get it through customs (once they say how much we had, they just
let us walk through). Thankfully Chris had arranged for a truck and a van to
pick us up at the airport. We loaded up everything in the back of the truck
(almost all the bags, minus personal ones) and then headed out to the hotel.
The hotel was great because it had an open restaurant, air-conditioned rooms,
and showers! I mean honestly what more do you need? We also had a pretty great
meal (by far the best since we’ve been out here!).
